Mr.Barry Schoch,PA’s Secretary of Transportation. Here’s a leader in our state who knows what he is doing and he is doing it right. It’s not politics, it’s about developing a right plan that is going to address our weakened transportation system.

Here’s something different that affect all of us.

I know our Secretary of Transportation, Barry Schoch. I have heard him speak several times in the past year. I interviewed him and have 50 minutes of video on excellent leadership that I will post to my sites soon.

Secretary Schoch has been talking about the proposed plan to fund PA’s transportation system. We need to do something new and this plan has it.

One important aspect is that our Transportation system is more than bidges and highways. It’s that and ports, rail freight, rail passenger, trucking, bus, biking, walkways, and more. All intertwined to make help our economy run. It’s Multi-Modal – all connected to make up a system that impacts all of us.

Here is an article by Sec. Schoch that I invite you to read to find out what is proposed for transportation funding in PA:

In a recent meeting of entrepreneurs working to improve their businesses, there was a comment made that stuck in my head. That statement was ….. “What is the CORE PROBLEM?”

That comment struck me because I am looking at situations in my life and biz, and trying to come up with solutions. It’s possible that I have been looking at symptoms, and trying to correct those symptoms, and not identifying what the CORE PROBLEM might be. I can’t fix symptoms of something that is deeper and the cause of the symptoms.

What is the CORE PROBLEM? That is going to take some serious consideration in discovering what that is. That might take some concentrated assessment, self-analysis, thought provoking review. Might take a discussion with a mentor or a fellow entrepreneur who I know well. What else can you think of.

Are you seeing symtpoms that you are trying to correct or change? You might be wasting your time and energy. It’s TIME to get to the CORE PROBLEM. If we identify that, work to correct that, then the symptoms shoudl go away…..and then……well, you can imagine what good things will happen.

Jason Verdelli What has helped me is thinking of some past event, circumstance or evident problem that you feel passionate about solving. I feel when we do what we were meant to, with hard work and passion, the tangible benefits come much easier. I feel when we do what we were meant to, with hard work and passion, the tangible benefits come much easier. I wouldn’t look at it as “What is the core problem?”, instead, I would look at it as what should I be focusing on now. It’s a slight shift in thinking and reverts the energy and focus from the negative to the positive. Once you do that you start thinking of ideas to shift your model and the way you have been doing things. In business terms, are you trying to create a need for people and organizations or are you coming up with a solution to an existing problem (much easier and slightly more predictable).

I learned this when starting Social HubSite. I realized that there are multiple problems people face where technology and time hold them back in solving those problems. That’s what triggered our offering. Before we tried to create a need and spend a ton of time and energy focus on “education” on say the need for a branded social network, versus the need to solve problems. Developing and enhancing the product and service offering became extremely clear when we looked at it that way.

Long story short, I feel we need to focus more on how can we take our past experiences or passions and merge that with existing needs in a marketplace to come up with a solution. What are your thoughts?

James Eugene Barbush Hello Jason, As discussed by Marcus Bucingham in his book, “First Break All The Rules”, utilizing and focusing with our strengths, our passions, is a right thing to do. Hello Jason, As discussed by Marcus Bucingham in his book, “First Break All The Rules”, utilizing and focusing with our strengths, our passions, is a right thing to do. And that is where we make progress. In addition to that, I’m thinking we cannot ignore our weaknesses, which may even be hidden to us, and can give us problems.

The following quote is contained in a Results Report from Harrisburg Biz Leaders on the topic of “Identifying Strengths and Weaknesses….And Make Needed Changes”:

“People like to view themselves in a positive light. No one likes to be considered a failure or a lesser human being. But everyone has weaknesses. Most of the time people tend to ignore their weakness and focus on showcasing their positive attributes. There is nothing wrong with showing your positive attributes but you can’t ignore your weaknesses. When people ignore the things that they are bad at, it tends to come back on them later in life.” Ref. How to Overcome a Weakness”, by CJ Carter

The results report is found here:
http://bizleaders.socialhubsite.com/files/2012/05/2012-05-11-HBL-Results-Report-Weaknesses4.pdf

The report touches on:
The Fatal Flaw
Recognizing Weaknesses
How To Overcome Weaknesses
And much more…..

“The Fatal Flaw” – Those words indicate something quite drastic could happen if we continue on with what we should not be continuing on with.

Thoughts from anyone on this?

When I engage with clients, we explore an ADVanced Insights profile that shares strengths, decision making and communication preferences, along with motivators and drivers. This insightful information provides valuable feedback on our strengths as they relate to our businesses, roles, and/or job descriptions. With a focus on “development”, the process of getting people to use the skills they already have . . . more effectively, rather than “training”, the process of teaching someone a new skill, provides us with the opportunity to reflect upon our strengths and responsibilities to define our focus, as Jason stated above, to plan our development and lifelong learning, along with what we might sub-contract to others, and when we DARE . . . maximize the potential of individuals and teams within organizations and have the Right People Doing the Right Things for the Right Reasons (for instance, who are the best people to do detailed paperwork, thinking and innovation, planning and process, sales, etc.)

I just saw a news report about an explosion at RL Livingston. Rick Livingston has attended Harrisburg Biz Leaders on several occasions and I just saw him this morning at an association meeting. One person was taken to the hospital. Please remember Rick and his employees in your prayers. Rick always shows himself to be a business owner who is concerned about the well being of his employees. @chris1217 @lisaheintzelman @jasonverdelli
